How to get Oscar for FreeCAD running with your OriginShape account, and what to do when something doesn’t work.
Getting started
Oscar for FreeCAD is an AI copilot that builds parametric parts from a description. Getting going takes four steps.
Create your account
Sign in with Google or your email address. New accounts join the waitlist.
Wait for approval
We email you when your account is approved, with trial credits to start. An invite code skips the wait: see the waitlist.
Install Oscar
From FreeCAD’s Addon Manager or a release ZIP, on FreeCAD 1.1.0 or newer. Installation guide
Sign in and describe a part
In the Oscar panel, click ⚙, then Sign in with OriginShape. Then type what you need, for example “an 80 mm flange, 8 mm thick, with six M6 holes on a 60 mm circle”.
Signing in
Your OriginShape account works in two places: on this website, and in Oscar inside FreeCAD.
On this website
Sign in with Google, or enter your email address and use the link or the 6-digit code we send. Each link and code works once and expires after 15 minutes.
In Oscar: browser sign-in
- In the Oscar panel, click ⚙, then Sign in with OriginShape.
- Your browser opens. Sign in to the website if it asks, check the device name and click Allow.
- The browser hands the sign-in back to FreeCAD, and Oscar shows your email and credits.
In Oscar: sign in with a code
For when the browser can’t reach FreeCAD (see the next topic).
- Click ⚙, then Sign in with a code. Oscar shows a code such as
BCDF-GHJK. - On any computer or phone, open the device sign-in page (
/device), sign in and enter the code. - Check the device name and click Allow. Oscar finishes signing in by itself within a few seconds. Codes expire after 10 minutes.
Why the browser may not reach FreeCAD
Browser sign-in ends by sending your browser to a temporary address on your own computer (127.0.0.1), where Oscar is waiting. That can’t work when:
- the browser runs on a different machine from FreeCAD: a remote desktop, a virtual machine or a cloud workstation;
- a firewall or security software blocks connections to local addresses.
Sign in with a code works in all of these cases.
Signing out
- In Oscar: click ⚙ and choose Sign out, or use Sign out in the account menu next to ⚙. This ends Oscar’s sign-in on that computer.
- On the website: choose Sign out in the account menu. This ends your browser session only; Oscar stays signed in.
Oscar stays signed in on each computer until you sign out or revoke it. After 60 days without use, it asks you to sign in again.
Connected devices
Every computer where you signed in from Oscar is listed under Settings → Devices, with its name and when it was last used. Revoke any you no longer use or don’t recognise: Oscar on that computer is signed out at its next request.
Signing in with an API key
For shared or unattended computers, Oscar can use a personal API key instead. Create one under Settings → API keys, then choose Use an API key in Oscar’s settings. The key is shown once; revoke it at any time.
Waitlist and invite codes
OriginShape lets people in gradually, so every new account starts on the waitlist.
While you wait
You can sign in to this website and to Oscar. Oscar shows a waitlist card instead of building until your account is approved.
When you’re approved
We email you, and trial credits are added to your account. Oscar notices the next time it checks your account; choose Refresh in Oscar’s account menu to check straight away.
Invite codes
An invite code looks like OSCAR-XXXX-XXXX. Enter it on the waitlist page to be approved at once, with the credits that come with the invite.
Credits and billing
Credits pay for the AI model Oscar works with. You can see them in Oscar and on this website.
What uses credits
Each request Oscar sends to the model while it plans, builds and checks your part. On Origin1 a typical request uses about half a credit, and a typical part build (about 30 requests) about 10–16 credits. Origin1 Super uses about 17–27 credits per build, Origin1 STR about 5–8 and Origin1 Design about 3–5. Using your own provider uses no credits.
The models
- Origin1 is the everyday model: fast and capable for most CAD work. It uses 3× the credits of Origin1 Design for the same work.
- Origin1 Super is the most capable model, for complex parts and assemblies. It uses 5× the credits of Origin1 Design.
- Origin1 Design uses the fewest credits. It’s good for first drafts from a description (text to CAD), and doesn’t read images or drawings.
- Origin1 STR is also for first drafts from a description, at 1.5× the credits of Origin1 Design. It doesn’t read images or drawings either.
Checking your balance
- In Oscar: the account badge next to ⚙ shows your credits.
- On the dashboard: your balance, usage over the last 30 days and the latest requests.
- On the billing page: credits per day, every recent request and your full credit history.
Trial
Trial credits are added once, when your account is approved, with no card needed. The usual 50 credits cover about three to five typical part builds on Origin1, one or two on Origin1 Super, or ten or more first drafts on Origin1 Design.
Pro and Studio
Two monthly subscriptions, paid through Stripe: Pro for regular work, and Studio, with the most credits, for heavier use. Every paid month adds your plan’s credits, and unused credits roll over. Subscribe on the billing page; Manage subscription there opens Stripe’s portal for your card, invoices and cancelling. Plans and prices
Switching between Pro and Studio
On the billing page, choose Change plan: Stripe’s portal opens, where you pick the other plan and confirm.
- Moving up to Studio takes effect straight away. Stripe charges the prorated difference for the rest of the period, and once that’s paid, the difference in monthly credits is added to your balance.
- Moving down to Pro takes effect at the end of the period you’ve paid for. No credits are taken back; from then on, each renewal adds Pro’s credits.
Top-ups
When they’re offered, Pro and Studio subscribers can buy one-off credit packs on the billing page. The credits are added as soon as Stripe confirms the payment.
When you reach zero
Oscar stops before its next request and shows an out-of-credits card with a link to billing. Nothing in your model is lost: add credits, then send your message again. We email you when your balance runs low, before it reaches zero.
Exporting your part
Oscar saves every chat’s work in a project folder and exports the finished part for you.
Which format to use
| Opening it in | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| SolidWorks, Fusion, Onshape, CATIA and most other CAD tools | STEP.step | Exact solid geometry. Open or import it as a solid body; FreeCAD’s feature history doesn’t carry over. |
| FreeCAD | FCStdmodel.FCStd | The full parametric model: the Params spreadsheet, sketches and features, ready to edit. |
| 3D printing | STL or 3MF.stl, .3mf | For your slicer. 3MF keeps the units; STL works everywhere. Oscar can orient enclosure parts for printing. |
Where your files are
Each chat that builds something gets a folder under ~/Documents/Oscar/Projects/, with the model (model.FCStd), every step, and an exports/ folder. When Oscar finishes a part, it exports STEP and STL there. For anything else, ask: “Export the part as 3MF.”
Using your own API key
Oscar also works with other AI providers, billed by them directly and without OriginShape credits.
Set up your own provider
Open Advanced: use your own provider
In the Oscar panel, click ⚙ and open the Advanced section.
Add a profile
Click Add and choose a provider and model: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, Mistral, DeepSeek, Groq, xAI and more, or a model on your own computer through Ollama or LM Studio, which needs no key.
Paste your key, test it and save
Click Test connection to check the key, then Save.
Good to know
- Switch between your OriginShape account and your own profiles in the Oscar panel’s header.
- Your provider key stays on your computer, in Oscar’s settings file. It’s never sent to OriginShape; your messages go straight to that provider, under its terms.
- Personal API keys on this website (Settings → API keys) are different: they let tools use your OriginShape account and credits.
Privacy and security
What Oscar keeps on your computer, what OriginShape records, and what Oscar may run.
Your sign-in stays in your keychain
Oscar stores its sign-in token in your operating system’s keychain: the macOS Keychain, Windows Credential Manager, or the Secret Service on Linux. Where none is available, it uses a file only your user account can read, and tells you so. Oscar never sees your password, and you can revoke its access at any time under Settings → Devices.
Scripts only run when you allow them
Oscar builds with FreeCAD’s own tools. It can also write Python scripts, but those are off until you turn on Let Oscar run Python scripts it writes (you approve each one) in ⚙. Then Oscar shows you each script first: Run, Run all scripts this turn or Don’t run. Allowing a script never lets it use the network; Oscar asks about that separately.
What OriginShape records
For each request: the model, the number of tokens, the credits and the timing, so you can see your usage. Not the content of your conversations, unless you send it to us as feedback. To write Oscar’s replies, requests are processed by the AI model provider (Anthropic).
Your data

Troubleshooting
The problems people run into most, and how to fix them.
The sign-in window doesn’t return to FreeCAD
Make sure the browser and FreeCAD are on the same computer. If the browser can’t connect after you click Allow, or nothing happens, cancel in Oscar and choose Sign in with a code instead. Browser sign-in waits 5 minutes; if it timed out, start again from ⚙.
Oscar says you’re out of credits
Your balance reached zero. On the billing page, subscribe to Pro or Studio, move up from Pro to Studio, or buy a top-up pack; then send your message again. Or switch to your own provider.
Oscar says you’re on the waitlist
Your account isn’t approved yet. If you have an invite code, enter it on the waitlist page; otherwise we email you when you’re in. Then choose Refresh in Oscar’s account menu.
The Oscar workbench doesn’t appear after a restart
For a ZIP install, the folder must be Mod/Oscar and contain package.xml directly. FreeCAD’s Report view (View → Panels → Report view) shows any error from loading it. Press Ctrl+Shift+O to open the panel.
Oscar signed you out
The computer may have been revoked under Settings → Devices, or Oscar wasn’t used for 60 days. Sign in again from ⚙.
Testing against a local server
In Oscar’s settings, under OriginShape account, set Server to http://localhost:8210, the local API, then sign in. Clear the field to use OriginShape’s service again.
Still stuck?
Email us with your Oscar version, your operating system and what happened. If a build went wrong, attach Oscar’s log: Oscar/logs/agent.log in your FreeCAD user folder.
